Models & Talent:
What are the requirements?

Typically, a female fashion model is 5' 8" to 5' 11" tall, size 3-6, and approximately 15 to 25 years of age. Male fashion models are 6' 0" to 6' 2" tall, jacket size 40 to 42, and approximately 18 to 28 years of age. There are, of course, exceptions but these are the general guidelines. Fashion models work internationally and locally in runways shows, showroom modeling, editorial and fashion print (such as magazines, advertising, and some catalogs), and many also do TV commercials.

Petites (females) are generally 5' 5" to 5' 7", ages 15-25 and used in commercial & some fashion print and catalog.
Commercial models, females or males, can be of any age and any size and have more of a "real people" look for everyday product and service advertising.

Actors can be of any age and size!

Do I have to take training to become a model?
It helps! Professional training can be a vital advantage in any highly competitive field and most clients do not want to book total beginners. Besides, the skills and knowledge acquired during training can be applied to any other pursuit or endeavor.

What about for acting?
Actors should always take training and usually do so all of their lives... especially if they want to remain competitive in the industry. Most top movie stars still train with acting coaches & dialogue coaches for upcoming roles and to improve their craft.

Do I need to spend money to be a model?
Models are self employed and work as independent contractors. You are starting your own business, therefore like any business you must invest for your business to succeed.

People always tell me “that if an agency likes you they should pay for everything” Is this true?
This is a common misconception. Agencies are not banks and therefore should not be expected to loan money. If an agency decides to advance funds to a model for photos, training, housing etc, it is a LOAN. The model must pay back any advanced funds whether he/she works or not.

Do I have to have a portfolio?
A portfolio is a model's book that is built up over time, not in one day. In order for any agency to start marketing you, you will need a least a few good pictures. For fashion models in particular, it is a lengthy and expensive procedure called testing but is necessary to stay competitive and working. You start one with your first test shoot from a fashion photographer and slowly add to your book with more testing and tear sheets (models print work that is 'torn' from magazines and catalogs they have done). For some models, particularly those seeking work in commercial print or promotions, a portfolio may not always be required.
